What to Wear on a Winter Trip to Baja California Sur, Mexico

Baja California Sur has completely stolen our hearts—and for good reason. After spending the past four winters and springs near the beach in Los Cerritos (yes, we even bought property there!), we’ve come to know and love the unique rhythm of life in this stunning region of Mexico.

Whether you're flying in for a quick getaway or road-tripping your way down the Baja Peninsula, packing the right clothing can make all the difference. The winter months in Baja California Sur are nothing short of magical—think sunshine-filled days, cool evenings, and a constant breeze coming off the ocean. Here's what you’ll want to bring to stay comfortable, stylish, and adventure-ready.

Ideal Winter Weather: Sunny Days & Cool Nights

One of the biggest perks of visiting Baja California Sur in winter is the weather. Daytime temperatures hover in the mid-70s to low 80s (°F), perfect for beach lounging, outdoor exploring, or sipping margaritas on a patio. Humidity levels stay around a comfortable 50%, so it rarely feels sticky or oppressive.

But don’t be fooled—once the sun dips behind the horizon, temperatures can drop quickly. Evenings and early mornings are noticeably cooler, often requiring a few extra layers.

🏖️ Beachwear Essentials

You’ll likely be spending a good chunk of time at the beach, so pack your favorite swimsuits.

A good cover-up, flip-flops, and beach bag will come in handy too. The ocean in winter can be a bit brisk, but it's still swimmable—with the BEST swimmable beach being a walk down the hill from us- Cerritos Beach!

Even when it’s breezy and doesn’t feel hot, the sun is intense. We use sunscreen daily and wear wide-brimmed hats or baseball caps to protect our skin.

Sunglasses are a must, too—don’t leave home without them!

🧥 Layer Up for Evenings

When the sun goes down, the chill sets in. Bring a couple of hoodies or light jackets, especially ones with hoods to protect your ears from the wind.

Long pants, leggings, and lightweight sweaters will keep you cozy during those cooler hours.

This is where layering becomes key—pack pieces you can easily peel off or add on as temperatures change throughout the day.

👟 Footwear: Think Comfort and Adventure

We’re barefoot or in sandals 90% of the time, especially when we’re near the beach. But Baja California Sur has become a bit of a pickleball paradise, so if you’re a player, comfortable sneakers are a must! You’ll also find plenty of tennis courts and even padel courts in Cabo, so bring the right shoes if you plan to play.

Planning to hike? Hiking boots are essential. The terrain is rugged in many areas, especially around the Sierra de la Laguna mountains and desert trails. Backpacks are also great to have for hikes—to stash water bottles, snacks, sunscreen, and a camera to capture those epic views.

🧢 Sun Protection is Non-Negotiable

Even though the weather feels mild, the sun is strong, and it’s easy to underestimate how much exposure you’re getting—especially with the cool coastal breeze. Daily sunscreen, lip balm with SPF, hats, and UV-protective clothing will keep your skin safe and healthy during your stay.

👗 Casual Vibes... with a Cabo Twist

One of the best things about BCS is its laid-back lifestyle. Most towns—like Cerritos, La Paz, and Loreto—are incredibly casual. T-shirts, shorts, sundresses, and sandals are the norm just about everywhere.

Cabo San Lucas, however, is a bit of an exception. It has a more upscale, resort-like vibe, with fine dining, nightlife, and luxury resorts. If you're planning to visit Cabo, it's worth bringing a couple of dressier outfits—think nice sandals, a collared shirt or blouse, and maybe a sundress or casual evening wear for a night out.
