RV Campground Review: Huerta Don Chano RV Park, Mulegé, BCS Mexico (Video)

Huerta Don Chano is a beautiful property that has RV sites and homes for rent in Mulegé, BCS, Mexico.

Don Chano is in a great location, right in-between the coast and downtown Mulegé. From the park it is an easy one mile walk to the beach, a one mile walk to town, and it is just steps across the street to the river. The owner, Manuel, and his family live and work at the property and they do a wonderful job maintaining it. It’s full of palm trees, colorful flowers, cacti and fruit trees!

We found the property on Campendium, and were able to read reviews, see photos and learn about the property before arriving. You can read my review on Campendium HERE!

We called ahead and since we were a party of 3 large rigs, Manuel saved his 3 largest sites for us and our friends. They even cut some branches for us so that our 42 ft. fifth wheel would fit in perfectly! Our group had the three largest rigs in the park, and from the comments and looks from others, we were probably the 3 biggest RVs to every stay there!

The RV Park and it’s amenities

The RV sites are lush, private, and nicely maintained. Some sites have full hookups, some have water and electric only, and others are dry sites. For those in non-sewer sites, there are two toilet stalls and two shower stalls available to use, as well as a washing machine right next to the office.

The restaurant on site, La Huerta, was above average, serving food from breakfast to dinner everyday except Mondays. The restaurant offers two for one margaritas on Thursdays which is great! It was really nice to have a restaurant and bar on site for when we didn’t want to cook a meal or go into town to eat out.

Other amenities include a fish cleaning station, community library, and free Wifi (read more about the Wifi below).

We found a beautiful hike that started at the back of the property and went throughout the hills behind the park. We couldn’t find it listed anywhere online, we were just lucky to have someone tell us about it!

Having el Rio Mulegé across the street was really convenient for fishing and paddling. We took our inflatable SUPs up and down the river numerous times and had a great time! The water in the river is highest in the morning and gradually gets lower with the late afternoon tide shift.

Cost

We paid $140/week for our full hookup RV site. Prices vary depending on what type of site you get, the number of people in your party, and the ages of your kids (they charged for kids older than 10 years old). There was no weekly discount but after talking with Manuel it seems like a month rate could be negotiated.

Wifi and cell signal

As stated earlier, the park had free public Wifi that ranged from 1-7mbps, but at times was unusable. The Wifi worked best right by the office (luckily we all parked right next to the office so we could use it a little from our RVs), and was useable for basic things like email, social media, and some light web browsing.

Telcel had great signal there, with super fast data speeds. Our friends’ Simple Mobile service worked well too.

A table and chairs sit in front of the office for people that want to use the free Wifi.

Driving through Mulegé and getting to the park

It was challenging to get through the tiny roads in town in order to get to the park. Luckily, there were no sharp or difficult turns, but the roads were narrow and there were many cars parked on the curbs, making it even more narrow!

There were low hanging branches and electrical wires in town too. Unfortunately one of our AC units hit a branch, which busted a hole in our air conditioner cover! It still works, so we’re hoping it’s just a cosmetic blemish. Once we got into Don Chanos, it was relatively easy to park and get situated.

Leaving the park and driving out of Mulegé

Many warned us that we wouldn’t be able to get out of town due to the narrow streets and a tight left hand turn, but we did it! The restaurant located at the tight intersection was closed on the day we left town (Tuesday), so no cars were parked at the turn, which made it much easier.

Manuel offered to get us a police escort where they would close off a one way street for us (basically leaving the same way we came in), but after driving out of town multiple times with just our truck, we felt like confident that we didn’t need the police escort, and we were right.

Because of the challenges getting through town with a big rig, we wouldn’t recommend staying at Don Chano unless you have a medium sized or smaller rig. It CAN be done, as we proved, but we did put a hole in the A/C.

Someone had recommended having a person on the roof of the RV during the portion with low hanging trees. Lifting up 2-3 branches as we drove down one of the streets would have prevented the RV damage. I think that would have been a good idea and probably something we will do next time if we stay in Mulegé again with a taller RV.

Our overall thoughts

Manuel and his staff are super accommodating and helpful, and it was a pleasure to get to know them. The park is absolutely stunning and very well maintained. Even with the difficulty of navigating through town, it will be hard to pass it up on our next visit. Other options would be to either boondock on the beach about 25 minutes away or stay at either Villa Maria Isabel or Hotel Serenidad, all which would allow us not to have to drive through town.

We enjoyed our three weeks in Mulegé, and felt like January was a great time to be there with great weather. The daytime highs were in the 70s and it got down into the 50s at night.
