Weekend Getaways Without The RV

We’ve been traveling full time with our kids in our 400 square foot home on wheels since 2018. We love our life, but we’ve realized in order to keep our marriage in tip-top shape, Aaron and I need to be intentional about having time away from the kids.

What Our Normal Getaways look like

Usually our getaways are simple:

  • Taking a walk around the campground together multiple times a week.

  • A long bike ride exploring the town on our Pedego e-bikes.

  • Going on date nights out to dinner or visiting a brewery.

Special Getaways:

Every now and then though, we get the itch to try and get away for the night or weekend. We have a goal of spending several nights or weekends a year away from the kids in a hotel, inn or B&B.

We do this to have intentional time to reconnect and make memories with just each other, one on one.

Our First Actual Getaway

Our first night away since we made the decision to start this new tradition was spent in Monte Rio, CA at Highland Dell Lodge, a quaint little bed and breakfast right on the Russian River.

Day 1: After checking in, we headed to nearby Goat Rock Beach in Jenner, CA. It was cold and windy but super beautiful. We sat and enjoyed the scenery while sharing a bottle of wine, and even got to watch a truck commercial being filmed (which was kind of cool!).

After a few hours we headed to dinner at the local hangout, the Blue Heron Tavern and Restaurant before heading back to our hotel for the night.

Day 2: Day two was also low key. After sleeping in and having breakfast at the lodge, we packed up and checked out. We visited a few nearby small towns on the way back to the RV park, walking their main streets and ducking into their local shops. Taking our time and just enjoying the adult time experience was so relaxing and enjoyable!

How we pack

We have learned to live minimally, so naturally we travel minimally on our getaways! We really don’t need much for a night or two away, and we love being able to pack everything we both need in one place, so we decided a travel backpack would be perfect for us. Our Pakt Travel Backpack is the only thing we need to pack our clothing, toiletries and even a laptop (in case Aaron needs to take care of a quick work issue).

The Specs:

  • It has a 30L capacity

  • It can be carried as a backpack or with handle by your side

  • SO MANY different compartments

  • When you open it up, it has two designated halves, which is perfect for Aaron and I being able to pack our things with separation.

  • The padded laptop sleeve fits most 15” and 16” laptops

  • The size is carry-on approved, so it’s perfect for flying!

We really enjoyed our time away and can’t wait to plan our next outing together!

Dating your spouse is important, and we’re determined to continue making it a priority. Getaways, even overnight getaways, don’t have to be an expensive experience. It’s just important to schedule them and actually DO them. You will never look back and regret making it a priority.

What intentional ways do you stay connected with your spouse, whether while on the road or in your house? We would love to hear your ideas!
